The Dark Room Dilemma – Emma the pastry chef, a well-known lover of mathematical puzzles and problems of logic after a long study has decided to select the most beautiful logical-mathematical games of each time proposing separately also the relative solutions. These questions require both logical and creative skills to be solved. The perfect mathematical puzzle must propose a simple situation to explain and a solution just as easy to understand but very complicated to find, often at the limit of the impossible for an average mind.
On this page we present The dilemma of the dark room, a beautiful game where a light-free environment and a deck of cards will become a real puzzle for Emma.
THE DARK ROOM DILEMMA
Emma was invited to a birthday party by Mario, a brilliant engineer who loved magic games and mathematical problems.
So once gone most of the guests Mario proposes to Emma this game.
“Emma follow me!” Mario said, taking her to a dark room.
Emma was a bit disoriented and perhaps in her heart she hoped that Mario would try to seduce her. Unfortunately it was not so.
“So, right now I’m holding a deck of 40 brand new cards – no marks or anything to recognize them. Here they are!” said the young man, delivering the deck to her in the dark.
“Now you need to know that 10 of the 40 cards face up and the other 30 face down and are shuffled. As you can well understand – he said – You have no way of knowing what are the cards in one direction or another.”
“And so,” Emma asked.
“Simple. Your task is to exit the room with 2 decks of cards with the same number of cards facing up.”
“Ganzo!” he exclaimed in the deep darkness of the room, feeling the warmth of the boy’s very close proximity.
“Emma is a game of pure logic so there are no puns and there are no tricks (like turning on the light or seeing the cards somehow).”
